Sowing and reaping

In sacred scripture, Jesus speaks to us, in the parable of the sower, about how crucial it is in our spiritual life to allow our hearts to be good fields. But it is not enough to wait for the miracle of the fruit. It is necessary to care for the soil so that it may be fertile. It is also necessary to be careful with the weeds, which so often grow harmlessly and end up suffocating the good plant. It is necessary to have faith in the farmer who is able to make a great tree out of a tiny seed.

What does the farmer expect from the seed? That it will produce much fruit. Jesus says that it produces a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold: it always produces, according to the capacity of the earth, that is, of the heart.

One more important detail: the seed has to die in order to bear much fruit; that is, fertility must occur. To die in order to live.

Today, in a society where time flies by, the seed and the field are forced to produce immediate fruit, because it is necessary to harvest and profit from it. Then, the appearance of the harvested fruit is carefully considered, often discarding the less attractive ones. The haste does not allow for contemplation, for caring with affection: contemplating the plant emerging from the depths of the earth, developing and growing, first showing the flower and finally offering the fruit. And if the sun is strong, if the land is depleted, if any threat arises, the farmer immediately gets his hands dirty, for the fruit to be harvested depends on his actions.

St. Gaspar teaches us to sow, even where the fields are barren or the weeds threaten the good seed. The good seed, which is the Word of God, will produce good fruit in society. How important is the Word of Truth for there to be peace in hearts, in families, in society! That is why the Missionaries of the Precious Blood are missionaries of the Word, the good seed, which in time will produce good fruit. There is no need to rush the harvest: everything in its own time.
