Menstruation without taboo

The Missionaries of the Precious Blood carried out an educational campaign focused on taboos surrounding menstruation for teenagers and young women in Safim, Guinea-Bissau. The aim of this initiative was to "break the silence, combat misinformation, and ensure that no girl misses school because of something natural to her body."“

We found the details of the information in the message we received:

“"More than 60 girls, students from different schools in the Safim Sector and the Airport Neighborhood, participated in a djumbai (a workshop/session) on Menstrual Hygiene, promoted by Plan International.".

As part of the celebrations for World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed on May 28th, Plan International, through the Girls Out Loud "Nha Fala" platform, launched a campaign today on menstrual dignity. The Catholic High School, Prof. Adriano António Vasconcelos, in Safim, was chosen as the venue for this "djumbai" (a traditional Brazilian event).

With the facilitation of Dr. Denise De Nascimento Da Silva, 60 girls were educated about menstrual hygiene, self-care during their period, and strategies for dealing with taboos. In addition to the “Djumbai” (a program involving menstrual hygiene), hygiene kits for menstrual periods were distributed to ensure that the female students have the means to maintain their personal hygiene and do not miss classes due to menstruation.
